Song notes:
This song was written during the Spring of 2004. For the most part it's only 2 chords until the bridge. But that was never the point. In my eyes this is one of my 2 crowning acheivements on this album, as well Paul's (the other being "It's OK"). While constructing the vocal melody I challenged myself to build up the melody through the course of the song without ever changing the chords for me to sing over. This was particularly fun and surprisingly easy to do. Never have I written and produced something where everything within the song builds so well.
Production notes:
This is the first of "The Big Three" (the others being "It's OK" and "When You're Lonely"). "The Big Three" are the 3 songs I went to town on from a production standpoint. The point of this song was to build it slowly into a fury, Phil Spector style. So first Paul and I rehearsed and constructed his drum pattern. I told him to make like he was 4 different drummers coming in to do 4 different sections with only cymbal patterns to break it up. This way he could keep coming in and out of the song with different patterns and it gives the drums 4 chances to "kick in" if you will (we've loved that effect since teen spirit, although not quite the same here). For me layering the album it's really like 5 sections. It goes like this...
The first 2 verses are the same for me but theres a slight build in his drum pattern in the second verse. Then the bridge is built up almost to the point of the end of the song, but not quite. Paul is almost in full beat and then distorted guitars and string sections come in. The third verse is semi-built, but only in Paul's drum pattern. After that verse ends, it explodes for the last 8 progressions of the song with the last 4 hitting its vocal climax.
